PS3 to go 3D, PSN still free

Along with plans to upgrade the PS3’s skills to 3D was mention of a subscription service. Rest assured PS3 gamers, online gaming will remain free, SCE boss, Kaz Hirai maintains.

Just in case you missed it, Sony earlier laid out plans to introduce 3D gaming to the PS3 via a firmware update to take gaming into the third dimension in preparation of Sony’s new range of upcoming Bravia 3D TVs.

Among its plans however was talk of “revenue streams from subscription.” It’s left many PS3 gamers blowing a gasket.

Fear not. Sony’s Kaz Hirai cleared things up with a hastily prepped statement telling gamers that while there are plans to introduce premium subscription services, these will be in addition to the free services.

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” said the SCE boss.

“Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”
